After much too long, I've finally finished my piece with the cute little girl with the hair buns. I named her Ky My and am dedicating it to my dad, who passed away during the time I was working on her. He also gave me these tiny Asian eyes that I've never really liked but is starting to grow on me ^_^

Finally finished the turtle. I decided to make him a totally separate painting after completing him since...I think he looks better on his own. :) His name is Leonidas, in reference to the Spartan king and one of his shield formations "testudo". Can't you just see the courageous spirit reflected in his form? ;)

Picking this blog up from where I last left my previous blog. I'm determined to keep this blog a bit more simple and plain so I don't have to deal with headaches from both an art and technical side of things. I've decided to pick up my Buns piece and am determined to finish it...especially now that I have a Wacom Cintiq ^_^. The learning curve for a Cintiq is a bit easier than an Intuos3 ~_~. Anyway, here's my turtle that I'm working on at the moment!

So to learn how to use color in paintings, I thought I could just copy a photograph and study the subtleties of shading, hues, etc. Here's the photo I copied:

Xania the Dark Elf Witch

This is my first attempt at digital painting with Photoshop. Admittedly, my motivation to create her was due to the upcoming Warhammer Online game. They have a fan section on their website and if your art gets chosen by them, you get entered into their beta. Enough motivation for me! Sadly, I have yet to hear anything from them... T_T

Anyhow, back to Xania, my evil temptress. I have yet to learn all the proper applications of color, color theory, etc. hence the black and white. Why a dark elf witch, you ask? Mainly because I love the description of what I've read of them...

"They are an all-female cult of warrior priestesses. Witch Elves consider the battlefield to be a holy place and are suicidally fanatical in proving their worth to Khaine by spilling the blood of their enemies. The cult is lead by high priestesess called hags, who bathe in blood to retain eternal youth." (<3 wiki)

Ok, so maybe the bathing in blood thing for eternal youth isn't so appealing, but they are usually seen holding on to the lopped off heads of men. They're sneaky, sly, evil. HEHEHEHEHE!!

Err..anyway, I digress. The following references helped me to create her:

- YouTube tutorial on painting hair in Photoshop. Witch elves generally have long beautiful hair.

- Model reference found on Deviant Art

The model reference helped me a lot. I wish I had taken screenshots or just saved images of her while I was working on her to show you the progress of her creation. She's not perfect even now but, as I've learned, it helps me a lot to see the progression of an artist's work to learn new stuff. I do, however, still have the original pencil sketch I worked on with her. It's not great....her eyes are a little too close but as you can see, that's the beauty of digital painting and sketching! You can easily fix that! Anyway, no laughing :P

Thankfully, my one semester course in Life Drawing at my local community college helped me to adjust the anatomy a bit to fit what I wanted, some changes intentional, while others not so much...

Oh, I also found an image I took when I was trying to decide which nose to go with...

In closing, I'd just like to say that if you're a starting digital artist, then congratulations! :D Also, go to Youtube, search "photoshop" or "digital painting", etc. and watch the videos! A lot of them are really helpful. If you feel you are lacking inspiration, google sites like Deviant Art and cgsociety.org. Join art communities that you like, view art, and immerse yourself in it. You'll find that not only do these sites look "cool" but they are also very inspiring and motivating. Don't think "I could never do something like that." You can! Just take small steps at first and practice (something I still need to do more of)! After I had finished this, I was so in awe of everything I had learned from just doing one painting. (I mean, seriously, look at my initial sketch and then the final digital drawing...) ANYONE can do ANYTHING they put their mind to. I know it's cliche..you've heard it all before, but it's not said so often because it's untrue. It just takes hard work and dedication and if you're not really to put that much work into it, then don't expect much back. Believe me, there have been times that I have felt discouraged and ready to give up and usually it takes me a couple days and some pep talk from my boyfriend, but thankfully, I've returned to the "drawing board", usually with a lot more than I started with originally. Self-motivation is hard, but possible, so get to it! If you need, I can nag you :) Just let me know!

Also, use references! Photos, art from others, etc. Uber artists use references so feel no shame in using them! My first misconception of artists when I started was that all great ones didn't have to use references, it all came to them magically, but I was WRONG! Think Mona Lisa! What is Leonardo without her as a model? Use all the help you can get. Those are your guides and eventually, you'll learn enough to draw some parts without references.

Please give me feedback on my rant (whether it is by commenting or asking questions) so I know all this has not gone to waste! If you criticize, please make them constructive. XD Thanks for reading :)
